Helping our Veterans

We are pleased to say that in conjunction with the Catholic Charities, The Right Step has started a new on going veterans program in 2010 to help homeless veterans gain life skills. We hope to expand the program so that we can help more of our veterans in their time of need. The program is a Equine Assisted Learning program that consists of a equine professional working with a counselor from Catholic Charities, the program has oversight from Catholic Charities. The goals of the program are different for each participant based on their needs. In general some of the goals are: to become better team players, develop problem solving skills, improve leadership skill, communicate more effectively, build healthier relationships, and enhance life skills.

Reining Hero's

In 2009 a program ran at Coventry Farms called Reining Hero's worked with the Aurora Mental Health Center on a program for homeless Veterans that are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The program was a study on the effectiveness of equine assisted therapy in managing PTSD. Robert Froug, M.A. will be publishing a paper on the results. Which we hope will show just how effective equine assisted therapy is for PTSD.

The results we have witness have been very positive and several of the veterans have responded by volunteering themselves in the other Right Step programs. The program also inspired us to pursue other veterans programs within The Right Step.
